Background
Since its establishment, WHITR-AP Suzhou has remained committed to promoting the implementation of the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage. It has actively facilitated cooperation and professional exchanges in the field of World Heritage conservation in China and internationally, promoted collaboration across the Asia-Pacific region, and provided a platform for cross-regional and cross-cultural professional dialogue.
Set against hills and the sea and shaped by a network of harbours, Macao presents an urban landscape in which mountains, waterfronts, the city and its port are closely intertwined. With more than 460 years of history as a port city, Macao stands as a living urban testament to the encounter and interaction between Eastern and Western civilizations. The Historic Centre of Macao was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2005 and represents the oldest, largest and best-preserved historic urban area in China with the highest concentration of architectural heritage reflecting both Chinese and Western traditions.
The Historic Centre of Macao bears witness to a long history of cultural exchange and interaction. Its distinctive urban character, shaped by the coexistence of Lingnan building traditions and Western architectural systems, together with the continued integration of historic spaces and contemporary community life, provides a representative case for exploring the integrated conservation and development of historic urban areas as living heritage in a cross-cultural context.
Workshop Theme
This International Workshop, under the theme “Integrated Conservation and Development of Historic Urban Areas as Living Heritage”, will take the conservation of the Historic Centre of Macao as a primary case study. It will facilitate professional exchange on the integrated conservation of historic urban areas in multicultural contexts, the conservation and restoration of traditional architecture, heritage governance, the continuity and vitality of local communities, and sustainable urban development.
The Workshop will also draw on practical experience from the World Heritage property, the Classical Gardens of Suzhou, including its integrated conservation and the conservation and restoration of historic garden architecture. By considering different urban development contexts and cultural traditions, the Workshop will further explore how historic urban areas can sustain their heritage values and cultural identities while maintaining community vitality and responding to contemporary urban development needs, thereby offering diverse perspectives and practice-based insights for their conservation and sustainable development.
